Tips ๐
- The campsite is in a dried-up river so itโs very hot (river dried-up due to a landslide in 2012).
- For some reasons, thereโs a lot of flies and bees.
- Itโs in a reserve owned by the government, so no walking or night safari allowed
๐ Accommodation
We stayed in the Savuti Wild Camp Site which was booked by the organisation. No facilities, proper wild camping, but some other campers nearby too.
๐ฒ Getting there
It took us the whole day to get there by doing some game drives on the way. The road from Kwai pass by the Mobabe Depression (dried-up lake) which is very very sandy so good idea to wrap your bags in bin bags.
โฑ Duration
We stayed two nights there which was a good time due to the heat in the camp.
Road to Savuti ๐
After leaving early from Kwai, we made our way north to Savuti. We did a quick coffee stop at the Mababe Park gate, and then started to make our way in the depression. As said above, itโs very sandy so protect your belongings!
On our way, we managed to see lions and elephants resting and searching shadows to protect from the heat. We even observed big tornadoes on the far end of the park, since the area is very flat and mildly desertic. After a nice lunch break on the road, followed by an improvised siesta, we arrived at the camp around 5PM for a shower and lovely dinner, trying to avoid the many flying bees at sunset (they quite down the rest of the time).
Various game drives ๐ฆ
As previously, our days in Savuti were the same program, with morning and afternoon game drives, siesta, dinner and early bed. While conditions were a pinch more basic than in other places and the temperature hotter, it was actually an incredible place to observe wildlife.
In Savuti, we managed to see two cheetahs feeding on a kudu, a female leopard feeding, a huge pack of sleeping lions, an almost-live ambush of a lion onto a kudu (big antilope), monkeys, jackals, elephants, giraffes and wilderbeast. Pretty much everything honestly in a very short time! We also took a little detour to again observe elephant drinking at sunset, as well as a local baobab forest composed by 14 huge trees. Due to the cheetah and leopard views, this place became our favourite spot of the trip!
Rock our awesome guide also found another Safari car having issues during on of our game drive, and kindly took the time to sort them out before heading back to the camp, legend!
