Tips 👏

  • Very relaxing and wild island. The vegetation is super green and very dense.
  • Locals go to bed early so make sure to sort out your schedule in advance.

🏠 Accommodation

We slept at Tinau’s Fare Ara, a nice little pension where we got a flat for four people with a kitchen. Basic but nice room and lovely staff.

🚲 Getting there

Flight with Air Tahiti from Papeete, 40 minutes.

⏱ Duration

We stayed five full days, but we feel three would have been better.

Tinau’s Fare Ara 🏠

We recommend to stay at this hotel. Slightly off from the centre of Fare (20 minutes walks from the shops and roulottes), this place have everything you need. Fresh bread in the morning, kitchen, washing machine and nice shower.

The owner, Tinau, is very friendly and helpful, ensure airport pick-up and drop-off, rent scooter (5000CFP/day) and car (8000CPF/day), and also can arrange boat trip with the Huahine Nautique Club located 2min walk from the hotel. We really felt at home. You can find them here.

We rented a scooter the first afternoon and a car the next day. In term of itinerary, we simply followed the only road, and did the tour of both of the islands. Here’s the highlight we recommend:

  • Old Sofitel Beach: At the north of the airport, this now wild beach used to be the one of the Sofitel years ago (we can still see the infrastructure of the hotel). Good snorkelling spot and nice place to chill. There’s some stream so bring your fins or your sea shoes.
  • Sacred eels with blue eyes: If you carry on the route north (after Maeva village) you’ll see a sign for the sacred eels. Stop there and take a look at those giants river eels (150cm for the biggest one) laying at the bottom of a tiny river.
  • Maroe Belvedere: At the top of a quite steep road, you’ll see a place to park and enjoy the view on the whole island.
  • Chez Tara: Located in Area (at the south tip of the island), you can enjoy a tahitian lunch for a decent price. The restaurant is also on the beach so you can do the bath and relax there too.
  • Royal Huahine: Resort where you can organise a day tour from the hotel.

Huahine by sea 🚤

One of our favourite day during our whole trip! Ask your hotel to book you the tour the day before (we did it via Huahine Nautique), called 3-in-1 pic-nic. Our tour started at 9AM, for 80 euros per person.

We stopped in several snorkelling spots (including sand banks, shark feeding and stream in lagoon), an over-water pearl farm, and a tiny island where we had time to chill and get lunch. This was an epic day, the view, the staff, food and snorkelling was simply outstanding. Make sure to do that during your stay on this island.
